Pet scammer offered puppy?

I was browsing on an internet classified add yesterday and came accross an add for a free puppy to a good home, with papers, vaccines, etc. So i was interested and emailed them with some questions. They said they were from toronto and asked for my phone number so we could arrange to have things figured out because i wanted this dog. They called once but I couldnt get clear reception to talk. I sent another email after this for more info and they started saying things like they were from toronto but were in africa on a missions trip and wanted to ship the dog back to a loving home for only the shipment fee. I figured out pretty quickly this was a scam, but how can i report it? They were using a yahoo email address and I have the phone number they used to call me on my call display.

I am NOT a breeder just interested in getting 2 puppies – don’t tell me about adopting a pet – that is not what I am asking! (I do plan on buying one pet and adopting another) anyway — I want to know whether or not this particular place is a puppy mill, unreliable, or a “scam” in Hunterdon County, NJ:

bobbi – i am located in NJ, I would never have a dog shipped to me without checking the place out first. I just wasn’t sure if this is a place to buy it from. I am located close to it.

I’m looking for a yorkshire puppy. Even though I’m anxious and hopeful I’m quite wary of online dog sellsmen, but I emailed a few people to see anyways. I’ve been emailing a woman at ndekim@yahoo.com.

She claims a 17 week old puppy currently 1.8 lbs (I’m skeptical about that part). She claims to live in Anchorage, Alaska, and she is giving up the pup because she is living in an apartment that does not allow animals. When I asked about cost, she said that all I had to do was sent $180 to the airport for shipment.

“We are now in our new and non pet apartment in AK.Anchorage and so you can only have my baby if you can afford just the shipping /delivery fee of $180 which you will pay the delivery agency directly so that they handle the shipping and delivery of the puppy to you . Note that you will pay this money directly to the company and not to me so that they handle the shipping/delivery of the puppy to you .”

Puppy for Sale-advance Fee Fraud

Nigerian scammers are using puppies as bait in a new scam targeting Western Australians.

Scammers are advertising a puppy for sale in newspapers or online and provide an email address as a contact point.When a consumer responds to the advertisement, the seller explains that the dog is in Australia (or overseas) and the owner has been transferred to West Africa to work for the United Nations. The seller requests that payment to be sent by wire transfer to Nigeria and says the dog will be shipped to the consumer’s address. However the puppy never arrives.

The puppy being advertised is either an English bulldog or a Yorkie with an asking price of $500 or $700. The puppy is supposedly home trained and good with children.

In one case, a regional consumer wired $500 but no dog arrived. He was then told there had been a shipping problem and was asked to send a further $100. When he still didn’t receive his puppy, he asked a friend to pretend to be a buyer and contact the seller. His friend was told the puppy was still available.

This is a typical advance fee fraud or Nigerian scam where the victim is persuaded to advance money. These scammers are looking for new and innovative ways to get people to respond to their schemes.

Consumer Protection has been in contact with a number of newspapers to alert them to the scam.

WA ScamNet advises consumers to be cautious of purchasing goods sight unseen from strangers, especially if they request money be sent overseas via wire transfer.

Advance fee frauds originated in Nigeria but have since been adopted by scammers worldwide. One of the most common advance fee frauds reported to WA ScamNet is fake overseas lottery wins.
